Action to Protect and Assist Vulnerable and Exploited Migrant Workers in the Middle East and North Africa (PAVE Project)

In the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, identification of trafficked migrants remains a huge challenge. To prevent re-victimization and ensure the provision of comprehensive, individual care and treatment, governmental authorities and civil society actors must first be equipped to properly identify victims of trafficking.

REMITTANCES TO LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN IN 2013: STILL BELOW PRE‑CRISIS LEVELS

During 2013, the total amount of remittances received by Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) was similar to the previous year, so the annual rate at the regional level barely varied. After the drop in these flows in 2009, resulting from the international financial crisis, remittance flows to LAC recovered slightly in 2010-2011, and then started to stabilize in 2011. In 2013, the inflow of remittances from outside the region reached US$61.251 billion.

Is migration good for the economy?

The economic impact of migration has been intensively studied but is still often driven by ill-informed perceptions, which in turn, can lead to public antagonism towards migration.

These negative views risk jeopardising efforts to adapt migration policies to the new economic and demographic challenges facing many countries. This edition of Migration Policy Debates looks at the evidence for how immigrants affect the economy in three main areas: The labour market, the public purse and economic growth.

Strengthening the Migration-Development Nexus through Improved Policy and Institutional Coherence

We know that migration contributes to development and it reduces poverty for migrant households on a great scale.

Policy and institutional coherence in the fields of migration and development is needed to fully reap these benefits for societies at large and for migrants themselves as well as to avoid the downsides of migration. This calls for governments and development actors to fully incorporate migration in their planning and programming.
