On 4 December 2000, the General Assembly, taking into accountthe large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December International Migrants Day (resolution 55/93). On that day, in 1990, the Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection ofthe Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (resolution45/158).

Celebrating International Migrants Day, this panel aims to raise awareness about the migration experiences of young people (defined as the age group from 9 to 25), the need to protect their human rights, and the opportunities that they create for themselves and the countries to which they contribute.

The Networking and Participation of Lo cal Authorities Team of the JMDI has launched a peer review involving Local Authorities in and outside the EU. The overall goal of the peer review is to involve LAs in the formulation of policy recommendations aimed to enhance the capacity of local actors to effectively connect migration with development trends.

This workshop targets migrant women leaders of diaspora organizations in Europe, North America and other host countries who are active in projects to facilitate the socio-economic development of their origin countries, as well as the integration of their peers in their destination countries.
