Calling all diaspora groups!

The iDiaspora initiative at IOM has launched a new a new global initiative for engaging diaspora, the Virtual Exchange on Response to COVID-19. Join us for the first discussion on Wednesday, 22 April 2020!

The exchange is a space for diaspora groups to share experiences and best practices to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and showcase the important work that diaspora groups are already doing in order to encourage policy makers and practitioners to strengthen their collaboration and support to such efforts.

The JMDI will host, jointly with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the European External Action Service (EEAS), a Project Lab entitled “The role of cities in implementing the migration-related targets of the SDGs” at the European Development Days (EDD) on June 8th at 15:15. This Project Lab seeks to further the international debate on migration and development by creating a platform to share the innovative tools and approaches of cities.

Vicenta Gonzales es la presidente del proyecto de Mujeres Emprendedoras a partir del producto de cacao en el Cantón de Upala. Ella, junto a otras miembros, han unido fuerzas para convertirse en auto empleadoras y generadoras de oportunidades para su comunidad.

Norwegian Refugee Council - A future in the Balance

In this report, the Norwegian Refugee Council is focusing on "how the conflict in Syria is impacting on the needs, concerns and aspirations of young people across the Middle East". The NRC spoke to young people from Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and the Kurdish Region of Iraq in order to understand and assess their main needs and concerns, and to explain what drives them towards mobility.

"Yo quiero más y más es eso"

Digna Espinoza, una costarricense que vive en  Pavas de Upala, se levanta todos los días  y dedica parte de su tiempo a trabajar el jícaro para convertirlo en ingeniosas piezas artesanales con un sello de calidad único. Hace 20 años se hizo un grupo de mujeres en su comunidad donde una vecina invitó a aquellas que estaban solas en sus casas sin mayor actividad para compartir. Después de los primeros encuentros el grupo se redujo a  ella junto y una persona más de aproximadamente 10 mujeres que asistían a este espacio.

“Es sólo cuestión de mentalidad”

Eso nos dice Óscar Flores, un joven de 23 años vecino de San Pablo de León Cortés en la zona de Los Santos. Este chico perteneciente a una familia numerosa, amante del turismo y su comunidad está decidido a trabajar por el desarrollo de entornos integrales para los suyos.
