2015 International Dialogue on Migration: Conference on MIgrants and Cities - Summary of Conclusions

The JMDI team is pleased to share with you the summary of conclusions from the 2015 IOM Conference on Migrants and Cities which took place in Geneva on 26-27 October. On this occasion, issues ranging from the role of migration in the shaping and developing of cities, the local governance of migration challenges, migration management strategies at both local and nation to multi-stakeholder partnerships were addressed.

In its latest forecast, the European Commission has predicted that the asylum seekers influx could have a positive economic impact on the EU recovery.

The European Commission, in its Autumn 2015 Forecast entitled ‘Moderate recovery despite challenges’ published on Thursday 5 November, has predicted that the expected three million migrants over the next few years would have an overall positive economic impact on the European Union growth.

White Paper - Mainstreaming migration into local development planning and beyond

The Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) have joined forces and expertise to carry out a study entitled “Mainstreaming Migration into Local Development Planning and Beyond,” which aims to provide a thorough analysis of what has been done thus far in terms of mainstreaming migration at the local level and allows for a stock-taking of functioning practices to paint a global picture of working processes, lessons learned and policy recommendations for future mainstreaming exercises.

On the 26thOctober, 2015, within the framework of the IOM Conference on Migrants and Cities, the JMDI, jointly with IOM, launched the “White Paper on Mainstreaming Migration into Local Development Planning and Beyond” at a side event held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Building upon the increasing recognition of the positive contribution of migrants towards inclusive growth and sustainable development in the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this study is the result of the JMDI and the IOM joint efforts to provide a thorough analysis of what has been done thus far in terms of mainstreaming migration at the local level to paint a global picture of working processes, lessons learnt and policy recommendations for future mainstreaming exercises.
