GENEVA—The United Nations' top official in charge of migration on Tuesday said the crisis rocking Europe needs a "global response", insisting that countries worldwide must be asked to do their share.

"We should have a European response as part of a global response," UN Special Representative for Migration and Development Peter Sutherland told reporters in Geneva, hinting at the need for an international conference "where every country is held up to the spotlight".

The EU is in disarray. Faced with waves of asylum seekers from conflict-ridden states, too many European countries have acted selfishly and unilaterally, undermining any chance of an effective collective response to the crisis.

Rather than calmly handling an eminently manageable situation, they have made Europe appear incompetent, near hysterical and without integrity.

The European Commission has adopted its position paper for the World Humanitarian Summit 2016 calling for "A global partnership towards effective humanitarian action".

Today the European Commission has adopted a Communication 'Towards the World Humanitarian Summit: A global partnership for principled and effective humanitarian action'. The Communication sets out the EU's strategic vision for reshaping humanitarian action ahead of the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016.

The underlying message is to build and reinforce global partnerships to advance towards the common objectives of saving lives, preventing and alleviating suffering and maintaining human dignity.

According to the data available, in July, more than 100 000 people mainly from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Corn of Africa managed to cross the Mediterranean.

On Sunday, 2nd August, the 193-member states of the United Nations agreed on the final version of the Post-2015 Development Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the next 15 years – including specific targets on migration! The declaration pledges to leave no-one behind and is now due to be formally adopted by world leaders at a summit in September.

After two weeks of negotiations, the United Nations 193-member states agreed on Sunday on the draft outcome document that will constitute the new sustainable development agenda for the next 15 years. U.N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s Chef de Cabinet Susana Malcorra described the agreement as “historic” but warned that the work ahead is immense. World leaders will meet from 25 to 27 September at the UN Headquarters in New York to formally adopt the outcome document agreed this weekend.
