The side event "Unlocking the Power Of Diaspora: New Partnerships For Development" which took place on June 24, 2017 at the UN Headquarters in New York was organised by the Governments of Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Morocco and Serbia, co-hosted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and financially supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. This side event took place in conjunction with thematic session four, in build up to the GCM.

The “Mayoral Declaration on Migrants and Refugees: Meeting Needs, Protecting Rights and Fostering Empowerment” is this year’s outcome document of the Mayoral Forum on Human Mobility, Migration and Development, which took place in Berlin on June 26-27th, 2017. The document was endorsed by 40 Mayors and City Representatives and contains guiding references for local authorities to continue advancing the rights, protection, integration and empowerment of migrants through concrete actions and initiatives.

In light of the upcoming Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, the special accreditation process for multi-stakeholder participation in the preparatory process has begun. This preparatory process will include a series of thematic sessions from April - November 2017, and multi-stakeholder hearings from April 2017 - June 2018. More information on this process will become available after the adaptation of the resolution on arrangements by the UN General Assembly.

The Refugee Studies Centre of the University of Oxford is offering a two-day short course on "Palestine Refugees and International Law".

It focuses on the policies and practices of Middle Eastern states in managing Palestinian refugees and explores such issues as the respect of humans rights, the legal status of Palestinian refugees in the region, and the socio-political historical context of the region.
