Context:

Migration is a core, cross-cutting dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Agenda. Mobile populations, whether internal, cross-border or displaced are a key target group for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Migration, including displacement, also has an impact on the achievement of the SDGs.

IOM is currently working to ensure the organization is equipped with the necessary planning tools and capacities to contribute to positive development outcomes and contribute to the achievement of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to foster strong partnerships across the UN Development System and beyond to harness the expertise and capabilities of relevant actors on migration and sustainable development.

Furthermore, IOM is implementing a Global Programme on Making Migration Work for Development (Phase III) funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and jointly implemented by IOM and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The main objective of the Programme is to enable the target governments to better govern migration to increase the human development outcomes and mitigate the risks for migrants, their families and communities at origin and destination. The Programme has a global focus with direct country level implementation in Ecuador, Morocco, Nepal, Serbia, Senegal and Tunisia and in association with Bangladesh, Jamaica, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and the Philippines.

The intern will support the Migration and Sustainable Development Unit with organization of various internal and external events and capacity development activities, including online meetings, trainings and webinars, peer exchanges for IOM staff in the Country Offices as well as government and non-government stakeholders, incl. coordination support, administrative assistance and logistics to the above processes and the implementation of the Global Programme on Making Migration Work for Sustainable Development in particular.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • University degree in Development Studies, Migration Studies, Social Science, Political Science, Anthropology, Economics, Business Administration or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

  • Good level of knowledge and experience in sustainable development and migration issues, including policies, regional and international cooperation, and local development;

  • Experience in supporting training and events.

  • Experience providing support to global Programmes and/or complex processes and projects;

  • Experience consolidating and analysing materials, drafting reports, presentations, information materials, etc.;

  • Practical experience of how-to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.

Skills

  • Excellent writing skills, including ability to write content in a concise and clear manner;

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills;

  • Coordination skills and the ability to liaise with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in a respectful and timely manner;

  • Ability to support planning, coordination and organization of workshops, trainings, awareness raising activities and other events at the regional or global levels, including direct communication with the stakeholders and partners;

  • Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;

  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;

  • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines

Languages

  • IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
  • For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.
