CASE STUDY: Business and Employment Support for Migrants and Communities in Morocco
Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible Relacionados y Objetivos del Pacto Mundial sobre Migración
Marie is from Senegal but currently lives in a coastal city in the northern region of Morocco called Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima. The area is known for beautiful ocean views and a lively, growing economy. Despite her experience owning a store in Dakar and her official legal registration in Morocco, she has been unable to find work. Most employers are not sure about the legal process to hire migrants and she is not sure how to set up her own shop.
Many migrants and Moroccans in this region are looking for work or to start up their own businesses. How do local community organizations like ES.Maroc.org create an environment in which Marie and fellow entrepreneurs can grow their businesses? How does one-on-one support for small local businesses and job seekers, regardless of where they are from, generate success for the wider local community? How would another community set up something similar?
Read the new case study to find out how communities can develop inclusive employment and economic solutions. The case study gives 7 tips that we learned from putting this approach into practice, including: developing entrepreneurs' confidence, tailoring services to different kinds of people and skills, long-term one-on-one support over several years and setting national policies that open employment and business opportunities for migrants. Practitioners can learn how to strengthen similar programmes to ensure that every person has the possibility - and the support - to follow their passion, creating stronger economies that help their neighbourhoods to prosper.
These activities are carried out through the IOM-UNDP Global Joint Programme Making Migration Work for Sustainable Development (M4SD) which supports Moroccan civil society, national and local governments, the private sector and the diaspora to establish community-led solutions that empower migrants and displaced people and create inclusive opportunities for all. ES.Maroc.org is a local community-led organization supporting Moroccans and migrants like Marie to set up and develop their own businesses or to find jobs. Decent work for everyone is not only a necessary foundation for personal success but is also essential for communities to prosper (Sustainable Development Goal 8).
