In Advance of COP26, MPI's Podcast on Climate Change Sits Down with IOM Division Head

The International Organization for Migration’s special division on climate and environmental change recently got a new head, Manuel Marques Pereira, who joined six years after the division was founded. Pereira sat down with the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) for the latest episode of Changing Climate, Changing Migration, a podcast analyzing the linkages between climate change and migration. The conversation touched on the division’s role in supporting efforts involving migration and environmental impacts, why its focus is needed, and which regions are particularly under threat.

"We have for a very long time ignored environmental drivers on migration policy discussions and legal responses compared, for example, with conflict, violence, or poverty," Pereira told podcast host Julian Hattem. “To us it’s very important, as the UN migration agency, that we enable that the conversations around people on the move include these environmental impacts and these climate change stressors.”

The conversation is the latest in Changing Climate, Changing Migration’s growing catalogue. Other episodes feature discussions with a range of experts about predictions for future climate-driven migration, financial mechanisms to support development projects, and how migration can be a tool of resilience against environmental change. The podcast also has episodes focusing on specific areas of the world, including the Pacific Islands, South Asia, East Africa, and the United States.

There are more episodes to come. As the world turns to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow this weekend, we encourage you to tune in. Stay informed by subscribing to Changing Climate, Changing Migration on your podcast service of choice, or check it out at our website.
