Climate Change, Migration and Sustainable Development in the UNECE Region: A Virtual Discussion with Stakeholders and Partners

Climate change is impacting the lives and livelihoods of people across the UNECE region and is exacerbating pre-existing inequalities and vulnerabilities; threatening the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and hindering recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In the face of climate change impacts, safe, regular and orderly migration is a powerful driver of sustainable development, adaptation and resilience-building.

During the 2022 UNECE Regional Forum for Sustainable Development, IOM will host a virtual dialogue with UNECE Member States and the European Commission to discuss experiences and good practices on integrating migration into climate action, policy and programming to build back better and support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The EU will discuss the Mainstreaming Migration into International Cooperation and Development (MMICD) project, with specific exploration of the Toolkit for Integrating Migration into Environment and Climate Change Interventions.

The insights shared will be beneficial for enhancing regional and global coherence to avert, minimize and address disaster displacement and ensure the benefits of migration on climate change adaptation and sustainable development are integrated into policy processes, especially ahead of COP27.
