UN Member States and UN entities announced the creation a new funding instrument to support government’s efforts towards safe, orderly and regular migration. The event is organized by the Friends of Migration, a coalition of UN Member States that promote better migration policies and the UN Migration Network, which brings together all UN entities working on migration.

The Migration MPTF was called for by the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2018. It is a UN pooled financing mechanism whose primary purpose is to assist Member States in their national implementation of the GCM. The Fund is now open for contributions, with a capitalization target of US$ 25 million for its first year of operations and expected to grow. UN entities will submit proposals for UN joint programmes, endorsed by recipient countries.

As a collective endeavour among UN entities, Member States and other partners, the Fund is a clear example of how the UN development system can jointly deliver integrated responses that support countries needs and ensure no migrant - child or adult, male or female - is left behind in the path to achieve the SDGs.
