Key objective

Beirut was selected as a recipient of the inaugural Global Cities Fund for Inclusive Pandemic Response, a $1,000,000 initiative to respond to the unmet needs of cities as they support migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people (IDPs) during Covid-19. The objective of the project is to use the Global Cities Fund to facilitate healthcare access for vulnerable Beirutis who are unable to access it due to limited financial resources or lack of means to access private or public health facilities. Beirut, in partnership with UN-Habitat, is using the funds to purchase and operate the city’s first Municipal Mobile Health Clinic, which provides free and non-discriminatory Covid-19 testing and other basic medical services to any individual who is unable to access these services currently, including migrants and refugees in marginalized neighborhoods.

Main activities

The Municipality of Beirut is using the Global Cities Fund to purchase and operate the Beirut Mobile Health Clinic, a mobile clinic which provides free and non-discriminatory Covid-19 testing and other basic medical services to individuals who are unable to access these services due to lack of transportation, lack of finances, or other barriers to care. The Mobile Clinic goes where it is needed most, focusing on neighborhoods with high populations of refugees, migrants, and vulnerable Lebanese that were severely impacted by the August 4th explosion, such as those working class neighborhoods bordering the port.

Beneficiaries

Vulnerable migrants and host community members, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
