IOM Diaspora Mapping Toolkit: A Comprehensive Methodology for Diaspora Studies and Policy

OVERVIEW 

The Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World (SASTA), along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), iDiaspora, UNESCO, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), ASEAN Young Scientists, SCICOMMX and the World Academy of Science (TWAS) are organizing the Global Conference for Diaspora Networks in Science.  

This Global Conference will bring together scientific diaspora of all disciplines including: basic, applied, social and humanities from around the world along with other stakeholders such as academia, government, industry and media to learn from each other, share experiences, challenges, and success and identify best practices that can make these networks more efficient in their work.  

IOM and iDiaspora will be delivering this session on the Diaspora Mapping Toolkit 

ABOUT THE SESSION 

The aim of this workshop organized by IOM is to present the IOM Diaspora Mapping Toolkit. The toolkit is designed to be a practical and flexible tool that provides comprehensive guidance on how to better capture data on diaspora members’ profile, capacities, and expectations. This product is a joint effort between practitioners and academics and was piloted in Ecuador, Eswatini and Senegal. It includes methodological advice, research strategies and practical tips to maximize data collection in diaspora studies and policies.

Ph.D Larisa Lara - IOM 

Larisa Lara is the Transnational Communities and Digital Communications Officer at IOM Geneva. She completed her PhD at the Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) of the University of Liège and at the Research Unit of Migration and Society (URMIS) of the University of Paris. She holds an MSc in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and an MA in Conflict, Security, and Development from King’s College London. Larisa has published multiple academic articles and policy papers specializing in transnationalism and diasporas engagement. In 2021 she was appointed as finalist of the VIII Worldwide Competition for Junior Sociologists engaged in social research.
