IPPN Knowledge Café: Systems Mapping as a Tool for SDG Integration into National Planning

About this webinar

The 2030 Agenda is an integrated and indivisible framework for advancing sustainable development, with varying degrees of interlinkages between the SDGs and their targets. Its effective implementation therefore requires systemic approaches that leverage understanding of complex systems of relationships between policy domains, between stakeholder constituencies, and even between different parts of government. As part of its support to policymakers and development practitioners for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has developed and deployed a suite of methodology and tools on systems thinking and SDG integration into national strategies and plans.

Taking a Systems Thinking approach in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development allows practitioners to visualize how improvement in one area of the system can either positively or adversely affect another area of the system, and how to turn trade-offs into opportunities for the benefit of the entire system while reducing the possibility of producing unintended responses and consequences. The systems framework allows policymakers and stakeholders to shift from a conventional, siloed and linear policy and decision-making approach towards integrated planning scenarios.

In this Knowledge Café, we will share an overview of ESCAP’s methodology of systems mapping for identifying policy interlinkages, synergies and trade-offs, as well as hands-on experiences and practical examples of country applications.
